The round table "Intellectual Property is a key issue on the international agenda: positive effects and potential challenges" was held in Moscow
On April 8, a round table on intellectual property issues was held at the HSE in Moscow under the auspices of the BRICS Expert Council. The meeting was attended by Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council, Vice Rector of the Higher School of Economics, and Alan Freeman, co-director of the Research Group on Geopolitical Economics at the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Canada), Secretary of the Foundation for Research and Education in the Field of Geopolitical Economics, co-editor of a series of books on geopolitical economics published by Manchester University Press.
Intellectual property is one of the main tools for reducing the difference in the development of countries, solving global problems, as well as ensuring technological sovereignty, which is especially important for the countries of the World majority and the BRICS. During the meeting, the experts discussed the current situation in the field of intellectual property, individual approaches and strategies for cooperation in this area.
In his speech, Mr. Alan Freeman, Co-director of the Research Group on Geopolitical Economics at the University of Manitoba, stressed that intellectual property is not only a new, but also a critically important type of property.
“ ”
In the current world order, this type of property is no less important than other pressing issues such as the polarization of the economy and the dominance of the dollar. At the same time, there is another equally serious problem, namely the dominance of the American-centric approach to intellectual property. I believe that the time has come to develop alternatives to this approach, and the BRICS can act as a full-fledged platform for this.
Alan Freeman
Vice-Rector of the Higher School of Economics, Head of the BRICS Expert Council, co-chairman of the BRICS Civil Society Forum Victoria Panova drew attention to the fact that the expert community appreciates the arrival of an outstanding scientist in Moscow.
During the discussion, Victoria Panova stressed the importance of spreading fair approaches to intellectual property.
“ ”
It is important that joint efforts be made to revise standards in the field of intellectual property, which would take into account the interests of not just a small group of countries that have long been beneficiaries of this process, but also the whole world. We will continue to work in this direction.
Victoria Panova
Vice-Rector of the Higher School of Economics
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), fewer than 2 million patent applications were filed worldwide in 2009. At the same time, in 2022, the figure reached 3.46 million applications.
The discussion on the results of the meeting will continue at the national level in face-to-face and online formats for further discussion with representatives of the BRICS countries.
