Lecture "Sugar Cities: Utopia and Reality of the African City in Contemporary Art" at Inostranka

Brics Network University Itg Economics Round Table «approaches to a Brics Centric International Monetary System» (5)

The BRICS Expert Council-Russia, together with the BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre, invites you to a lecture titled "Sugar Cities: Utopia and Reality of the African City in Contemporary Art."

The lecture will explore the evolution of artistic interpretations of African cities from the 1960s to the present. Through the works of artists from the BRICS nations and their partners, cities such as Cairo, Lagos, Cape Town, Addis Ababa, Kampala, and others will take centre stage as the main characters of the story.

Participants will discover:

  • How the visual language of urbanism transforms over time
  • How art interprets the contradictions between colonial heritage and local ways of life
  • How artistic imagery captures experiences of social fragmentation, vulnerability, and the drive for transformation

This theme remains highly relevant today, forming an important part of the search for a new identity for the Global South and for major groups like BRICS.

Speaker: Ksenia Guseva, researcher of creative industries in Asia and Africa, and Communications Manager at Strelka Construction Design Bureau

The lecture will be held at the BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre based at the Library for Foreign Literature (Inostranka). Admission requires either a library card or a passport for guest registration.
